Lake of Avernus
It is the location that mostly evoke Homer, Virgil and the cult of the afterlife, because it was considered the entrance to Hades. It is a volcanic lake, deep in the center m. 34 approx. In 37 BC, on ideation of Agrippa, it was connected to the sea by the lake Lucrino, with a wide canal, in order to realize a colossal arsenal (Portus Julius). Along the eastern shore of Lake Averno, you can admire the magnificent thermal room, known as the “Temple of Apollo”, of Hadrian, covered by a dome with a diameter of about 38 meters, slightly lower than that of the Pantheon in Rome . Along its banks it is also facing the Sibyl’s cave.
